Airports are places that people go to go places faster. However, the reality of today’s airports is that of hurrying up in order to wait. The Airport Slow Chair explores the potential of transforming downtime into Slow Time, providing an opportunity for play in the context of our busy days.

This project begins with research on how people pass their time waiting in airports, continues with ideation and form exploration, and culminates with the development of a physical prototype. The final solution is durable enough to withstand the demands of airport usage, designed for disassembly for ease of repair, uses green materials, and provides a playful rocking experience for the user. This project was developed as part of my Masters Thesis, “A Change of Pace: Rethinking Tempo While Designing for Living,” under the guidance of furniture designer Mark Goetz.
